Alienation As A Theme In Beowulf

Alienation is a core theme in “Beowulf” and is the compact perception responsible for many of the character’s actions and behavior. Beowulf is remote any other man known at the time, and with that world situation and responsibility comes the feeling of being apart from all others and inefficient to truly relate to another human being. Grendel is banished as a monster initially because he is a descendant from Cain, and thence has much disdain and envy for the people of Heorot, especially when they be joyous and singing in unity in the mead hall. In addition to the feeling of alienation shared by these deuce main characters, what is unnoticed even more so is the alienation of every man. It is not really mentioned (as every man is a “son of a father” he must discourse with pride about his ancestry) that they all have reputations to live up to. This causes everyone to feel as if they are on their own way, change from all others. The characters do what they do out of either first moment or out of revenge, but what they all share in common is that their acts are derived from a deep underlying emotion; the sense of alienation and a completely individual path that they must walk alone.




Beowulf is born with a gift as well as a curse; he is the strongest and greatest hero of his time, but at the same time he is all alone in his endeavors and has nobody to whom he cornerstone really relate to. The poet refers to Beowulf saying, “There was no one else corresponding him alive. / In his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, / highborn and unchewable” (ll.196-198). This clearly states his very special role and his importance to those who deficiency help defending themselves. One could say that with such power it is his duty to fight these monsters and save the kingdom. Beowulf is aware of his duty, and whether he likes it or not, he is obligated to live for the sole purpose of engaging battles and fighting monsters to save those who are weaker than he.
