Aristotle defines the tragic hero in lead ways: not all in all pious nor utterly villainous, has a downfall brought on by some error in judgment or frailty, and is either “highly renowned or prosperous” so that the fall from good fortune to mishap will arouse strong emotion in the audience. In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and Sophocles’ Antigone it’s diffused to see that according to this translation both Creon and Brutus are definitely tragic heros.
In these works, it is easy to see that both Creon and Brutus are neither completely virtuous nor utterly villainous. Creon states he wishs what’s good for the state and no enemies. However, he becomes stubborn and unwilling to listen to Haemons plea for Antigone’s life. In the beginning of the play, Creon shows he cares about the country and what happens to his people. This shows he has some virtues and isn’t utterly villainous. The fact that he becomes unjustified with his power, orders Antigone dead and won’t consider otherwise shows his abuse in his character. In Julius Caesar, Brutus claims to want what’s best for the country. However, to rack up it, he took part in the brutal stabbing of Caesar.
At the end of the play Marc Antony says Brutus is the “noblest Roman of them all”(Act 5, Scene 5). Also, Brutus dialog about how much he drive ins the country. This shows his true virtue and love for Rome and its people. Although Brutus wants what’s best for Rome, he kills Caesar, who he claimed to love. He thought that killing him would be best for Rome, but it ends up being his biggest mistake. He

ends up loosing the trust of the country and in conclusion dying because of it. While both of these characters are neither completely virtuous nor utterly villainous, they definitely made some errors in judgment.
