In 1891 after serving as the Athletic handler at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, which was also his alma mater, Naismith moved to the YMCA Training indoctrinate in Springfield. It was during his time in Springfield that Naismith was presented with the problem of finding a sport that could be played indoors by pupils at the School for Christian Workers when the weather turned bounteous during the winter. The majority of games that had been played before this relied on strength sooner than every great emphasis on skill which is why Naismith finally settled on basketball. The original game was played with a soccer ball and peach baskets for goals.
Naismith originally devised 13 rules for the game, many of which remain unchanged to this day. Kansasheritage.org lists the 13 original rules as;
1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist.
3. A player cannot take place with the ball.
