As teachers we should all have a philosophical belief or perspective on which we innovation our teaching and tuition styles and outcomes. We must be reflective and full of life in thinking about how we teach, how we cater to the needs of our students and most importantly how we organise the skills, attitude and values in our students so as to positively contribute to their lives as individuals and to the society at large.
There are four main philosophical perspectives from which a teacher can base their ideology and methodology in the classroom upon, these are namely, idealism, realism, pragmatism and existentialism.
The idealist philosophical system base on the works of Plato seeks to develop a teacher who focuses on developing the rational mind of a child by training the intellect and creating lasting values and attitudes as well. The realist philosophy based on the works of Aristotle seeks to develop a teacher who focuses on the common core knowledge and skills and its mastery by the learner.
The pragmatist philosophy based on the works of Rousseau and Dewey seeks to develop a teacher who focuses on the child, creates and uses flexible educational methods of teaching and development in as natural a setting as possible. The existentialist philosophy based on works of Satre seeks to develop a teacher who allows his/her students to discover knowledge through their possess effort. Knowing and adopting any of philosophies mentioned previously will help variety a teacher’s character, teaching style and learning outcomes. It will also affect the type of curriculum use by the teacher.
