Darwin wrote in his book, The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals, that the saying on ones face clearly reflects the sense being felt (Pinel, 2011). It does non matter what species, dog, cat or human. He believed emotion and the expressions were products of growing (Pinel, 2011). Darwins theory had three main ideas.
The James-Lange theory consists of, emotion-inducing sensorial stimuli are received and interpreted by the cortex, which triggers changes in the intuitive organs via the autonomic nervous system and in the skeletal muscles via the somatic nervous system.(Pinel, 2011, pg 444). After this the autonomic and somatic triggers the emotion (Pinel, 2011). So, when we see something sad like a hungry baby, it triggers our senses to tactile property sad and we may shed a tear or feel heartache. The Cannon-Bard theory is much like the James-Lange theory. The change is that the randy stimuli have two excitatory effectuate (Pinel, 2011).
These two effects are feeling of emotion in the brain and expression of emotion in autonomic and somatic nervous systems.
The limbic system was proposed by Papez. The word limbic means boarder. The rendering is that emotional expression is controlled by several nuclei and tracts that are co-ordinated and go around the thalamus. Papez projected that emotional states are verbalised in the implement of the hypothalamus. Emotions are experienced through the action on the cortex (Pinel, 2011).
