Freemans Slave Pen
The primary texts for this question paper by Solomon Northup and John Br avow are severe reminders that monuments marking the deepest descent into human depravity exist external the borders of Auschwitz, Poland, the city that housed the Nazi concentration camp that killed four million, one-hundred grounds Jews, gypsies, and other individuals deemed not worthy by the Nazi politics to live, physically and mentally disabled men, women, and children as recorded by the Jewish Virtual Library (www.jewishvirtuallibrary.com). The United States of America has its own monuments of dehumanization that silently haunt and crouch painfully in the shadows of the grand memorials named for Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln.
These infamous monuments of unfathomable human drunken reveler cannot be found on a map; in that location are no statues to honor the poor souls who were tortured; in that location are no libraries to catalogue the names, birth dates, and death dates, and; there are no months, weeks, or even one angiotensin converting enzyme day set aside in remembrance of the millions who literally and figuratively lost their lives and basic humanity in a state-sanctioned system of hard workerry that held that people of African ancestry and their descendants were not citizens and accordingly were not protected by the record of the United States of America (Dred Scott vs. Sandford, 1857). Yet, these shameful monumentstermed slave pens by Northup and brownedhave not escaped detection because two origin slaves summoned the courage to tell their stories. Life in the slave pen, as described by Northup and Brown, was a nation unto itself that was confined physically, emotionally, and symbolically; it was a nation based strictly on shape and it enforced its unwritten but understood constitution, rules, culture, norms, taboos, rewards, and punishments on its citizen/slave population.
