-Also know as, the Feast of Dedication or the Feast of Lights.
-Hanukkah celebrates the rebellion of Jewish freedom fighters, known as the Maccabees.
The Maccabees were a group of warriors who fought rearward against Antiochus, a Syrian ruler, who desicrated the holy site of the due south temple and tried to force the Jews to convert to a Hellenic dash of life with Zeus as their god.
-Heavily outnumbered, the Maccabees were able to recapture the Second temple, which was a very holy site in ancient Judaism.
-In Hebrew the word Hanukkah means Dedication.
-Hanukkah pays tribute to the dedication of the Maccabees, who believed in their right to religious and cultural freedom
-The most prevalent theme of Hanukkah is the lighting of the candelabrum. This is symbolic of the when the Maccabees reclaimed the holy temple.




-After reclaiming the temple the fighters found enough oil to light a lantern, by which to read the Torah, for one day.
-The lantern remained lit for eight full days.
-The Maccabees fixed that since they were unable to celebrated Sukkot they would do so once the Temple was rededicated.
-Sukkot, lasting seven days, became the timeframe adopted for Hanukkah.
-To many Jews, Hanukkah raises issues such as: Oppression, Identity, religious freedom and expression, and the need to fight for national independence (My Jewish Learining, n.d.).
